Reading Çalışmaları, (Reading Practices), The Crown, Pay Gap Scandal

Claire Foy has admitted she has been left[A1]  embarrassed by controversy[A2]  over the gender pay gap [A3] on the Netflix series The Crown.

The actress claims[A4]  the scandal has changed her approach to Hollywood, after a producer disclosed[A5] last month that Foy, who starred as the Queen, had been paid less than Matt Smith, who played Prince Philip, because Smith was better known.
She said: "It definitely opened my eyes to a lot. And I certainly won't be naïve about those things.
"It's really opened my eyes about what I am allowed to have an opinion [A6] about, and what I'm allowed to stand up for myself [A7] about.
"And I think that's really changed my approach to myself and other women in this industry. It's been only a positive thing - even though[A8] , embarrassing."
According to reports, Foy was paid $40,000 per[A9]  episode - a figure dwarfed[A10]  by the salary of other television stars. Lena Headey, the British actress, earned an estimated $500,000 per episode for Game of Thrones. Smith’s salary for The Crown has not been disclosed.
The gender pay gap has become a big issue in Hollywood after revelations[A11]  that many female stars have been paid less than their male counterparts[A12]

Foy and Smith are being replaced by older performers in the next season of the show, but it did not stop Matt Smith speaking up [A15] to support his co-star[A16] .

He told the Hollywood Reporter: "Claire is one of my best friends, and I believe that we should be paid equally and fairly and there should be equality for all.
"I support her completely, and I'm pleased that it was resolved[A17] and they made amends for it because that what's needed to happen.
"Going forward, I think we should all bear in mind[A18] that we need to strive[A19] to make this better and a more even playing field[A20] for everyone involved – but not just in our industry, in all industries."

Last month, producer Suzanne Mackie attributed[A21] the pay-gap to Doctor Who star Smith's higher public profile[A22] at the time of casting[A23] .

She promised that there would no such issue when The Crown returns for a third series, with Olivia Colman and and Tobias Menzies taking over the lead roles[A24] “Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen,” Mackie said.

In March, a petition[A25] was launched[A26] calling on Smith to[A27] donate[A28] the difference between his salary and Foy's to the sexual inequality[A29] campaign group Time's Up. The petition has so far has garnered[A30] more than 45,000 signatures.

In response[A31] , the show's production company[A32] Left Bank Pictures urged[A33] fans not to blame the cast for the pay-gap.

"We want to apologize to both Claire Foy and to Matt Smith," the statement read.
"As the producers of The Crown, we at Left Bank Pictures are responsible for budgets and salaries; the actors are not aware of who gets what and cannot be held personally responsible [A34] for the pay of their colleagues."

In March of this year, Left Bank Pictures, the producers behind Netflix’s monarchy fantasia The Crown, found themselves in hot water [A35] after revealing[A36] that supporting actor Matt Smith (Prince Philip) takes home a larger salary than star Claire Foy (Queen Elizabeth II). I’ll spare[A37] you the details, but they argued Smith gets paid a heck[A38] of a lot more than Foy because of all the eyeballs[A39] he brings in from his Doctor Who days, name recognition and all that, regardless[A40] of the fact that Foy is the damn lead. A few weeks later Foy told Entertainment Weekly[A41] she was “not surprised” that public outrage[A42] ensued[A43] following the gender pay disparity[A44] news. Left Bank has since apologized, with creative producer Suzanne Mackie offering[A45] , “Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen.”

The Daily Mail reports that, in order to[A46] right the company’s past wrongs, Foy will receive $275,000 in back pay[A47] . Left Bank shared the following statement:

“As the producers of The Crown, we are responsible for budgets and salaries. The actors are not aware of who gets what and cannot be held personally responsible for the pay of their colleagues. We are absolutely united with the fight for fair pay, free of gender bias[A48] and for a rebalancing[A49] of the industry’s treatment[A50] of women in front of the camera and behind the scenes.”

At last week’s Tribeca Film Festival premiere[A51] of Mapplethorpe, a biopic[A52] starring Smith as the enigmatic[A53] photographer, he addressed the gender pay disparity drama:

“I think actually she probably should’ve been paid that originally[A54] in the first place[A55] and I think everyone’s taken a long hard look at themselves [A56] and gone ‘Here’s where we went wrong and can we go forward and make it right?’ The problem is it happened too late. She’s the Queen for God’s sake. It’s ridiculous.”

“Probably should’ve”? He’s right about one thing—it is ridiculous.
